Poodle Mixes

Poodle Mixes and Designer Dogs

It has become quite popular to breed poodles with dogs. These poodle mixes have names like labradoddle, goldendoodle and schnoodle. Collectively they are known has designer dogs.

A poodle mix inherits traits form both parent breeds. The mix is rarely an even split, and the dog often resembles one parent.

Poodles were originally retrievers and well suited to water with a moisture resistant coat. Poodles are famous for being both highly intelligent and very active. Without regular exercise, play and mental stimulation the poodle will invent its own entertainment, which often leads to mischief. The poodle is easily trained because of its intellect. Poodles also love attention. Finally, the poodle is considered a non-shedding dog.

The other traits of the designer dog will come from the other breed.

Poodle Mixes - Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is part Labrador Retriever. The lab is a gun dog, bred to fetch things from water. The paws of the lab are webbed which aids swimming. The modern lab enjoys recreational swimming. The Labrador Retriever is an excellent tracker and it has a keen sense of smell.

The lab is mild mannered, and is tolerant of other dogs, people and children. This makes them a good choice as a family dog. The dog has a high energy level, loves to play and sometimes needs to be pulled back if playing too recklessly.

The Labrador Retriever is known to ingest anything it can get its teeth on, and this is not limited to food. Their appetite is insatiable and they may constant beg for food. The owner of a lab must carefully monitor their food intake to prevent obesity.

Poodle Mixes - Goldendoodle

The Goodledoodle is half Golden Retriever. This breed is again a former water prey gun dog. It has an affinity for water and coat suited for warmth in the water. Their hunting skills include the ability to focus, agility, strength and the patience to wait quietly for prey.

They are intelligent, eager to please and trainable. This allows them to be guide dogs or search dogs.

The Golden Retriever is a calm, loyal and trusting dog. These traits make it an ideal family pet. They are poor guard dogs as they readily accept strangers. They also accept other animals. In fact, it is rare for the golden retriever to exhibit any aggression.
