What Does Lemon Juice Do?
Lemon juice contains several naturally occuring acids, including salicylic acid. This acid penetrates pores to remove blockages and dead skin cells.
Dead skin cells are a major source of breakouts. The dead skin will block a pore and prevent the sebum oil from the sebacous gland from escaping onto the surface of the skin. The trapped oil builds up in the pore causing a whitehead. If the blockage allows air inside, the oxygen will oxides the oil turning it a dark color. This is a blackhead. Finally, bacteria on the skin that consume the oil and thrive in a low oxygen environment begin to grow and multiply. This provokes an immune response within the skin and causes a pimple.
So, using lemon juice short circuits the whole process by preventing the pores from becoming blocked. Even better, it removes blockages that already exist. Plus, it can lighten scars and even skin tone.
